Disciples Win Third Game in a Row

September 15, 2007

In a battle of two of Virginia’s homeschool football teams, on Saturday the Central Virginia Homeschool Disciples beat the Loudon Homeschool Lions 42-6. On a beautiful Fall afternoon, the Disciples won their third game in a row and improved their record to 3-1, dominating both sides of the line of scrimmage against the Lions. The Disciples offense had 5 players run for touchdowns, and the defense added a touchdown and a safety. Only a spectacular 75-yard pass play by the Lions kept the Disciples from recording their second shutout of the season.

The Disciples defense smothered the Lions offense on their first drive, and the offense drove quickly down the field for their first score. Levi Scott scored on a 20-yard run, and Mike Durrette ran in the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. After a mishandled kickoff, the Lions were pinned deep in their own territory. The Disciples defense then trapped the Lions quarterback in the end zone for a safety, and a 10-0 lead. Following the Lions kick, the Disciples offense drove quickly down the field again for anther score. Nathan Hollis scored the touchdown on a 15-yard run, and Shawn Estes ran in the conversion. The Disciples led 18-0 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

The Disciples quick start allowed Coach Hollis and his staff to substitute freely for much of the rest of the game. The starting offense played just one more series, at the start of the 3rd Quarter, which allowed many players on both offense and defense to get significant game experience. A number of players stepped up and played well in their first extended playing time.

After another defensive stop, the Disciples offense scored its third touchdown at the beginning of the 2nd the quarter with Jonathan Kinker running for a 4-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt failed. The highlight of the game for the Lions came when Quarterback Paul Larock threw a long pass downfield, and wide receiver Seth Kijewski made a nice leaping catch, kept his balance and outran the Disciples defenders to the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown. The Disciples defense stopped the extra point attempt, and the half time score was Disciples 24, Lions 6.
The Disciples offense took the second half kickoff and drove down the field for another quick score. Josh Harris scored the touchdown on a 4-yard run, and the Lions blocked the Disciples extra point kick. The Disciples defense scored the next touchdown. After pushing the Lions offense back to its own goal line, the Disciples forced a fumble in the end zone and Matt Reber recovered for the touchdown. The Disciples extra point kick was wide left, and the Disciples led 36-6 at the end of the 3rd Quarter.

The Disciples scored the only touchdown of the 4th Quarter, with David Norfleet scoring on a 1-yard run. The Lions had a scoring opportunity when they completed another long pass, but a diving tackle by Thomas Gresham saved the touchdown and the defense stopped the Lions from moving the ball further.

After the game, the two teams met at midfield for a time of prayer. Coach Dave Hollis praised the Lions for the effort they put forth, and the improvement they have made since the two teams met for a preseason scrimmage. The Lions are in their first year, and dressed 16 players for the game. Led by Coach Ron Kijewski and his staff, the Lions are building a program and looking to recruit more players from the Northern Virginia homeschool community for next year. Speaking with some of the parents of the Lions players, they view the Lions and the Virginia homeschool movement as an answer to prayer and they look forward to seeing the team improve.

The Disciples’s coaches were pleased with the team’s play. The offense continued to look sharp, with the offensive line opening holes and the backs running hard. Other than the two long pass completions, the Disciples defense held the Lions offense to negative yardage. Their blitzing, attacking style once again kept the other team’s offense off balance.

Zack Hayes suffered a knee injury late in the game, but it did not appear to be serious. Six injured Disciples players were able to sit out the game, and all of them are probable for next week’s game.

Next Saturday the Disciples play Portsmouth Christian School. The game is at 2pm at 3214 Elliott Avenue, Portsmouth, VA 23702.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! On Friday, September 28, at 7pm the Disciples play their final home game of the season against Chincoteague High School. This will be Seniors Night.
